When their father passes away, four grown, world-weary siblings return to their childhood home and are requested -- with an admonition -- to stay there together for a week, along with their free-speaking mother (Jane Fonda) and a collection of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. As the brothers and sisters re-examine their shared history and the status of each tattered relationship among those who know and love them best, they reconnect in hysterically funny and emotionally significant ways.

Critics Consensus

This Is Where I Leave You has its moments, but given the amount of talent assembled onscreen, the rather pedestrian results can't help but feel like a letdown.

This Is Where I Leave You | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Jason Bailey Flavorwire It speaks volumes about the current shortage of this type of project that so many talented people were willing to attach themselves to a picture as subpar as this one. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review This Is Where I Leave You | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Alissa Wilkinson Christianity Today We get set piece after set piece, character moment after character moment, with few of them doing more than letting characters talk about themselves and tell each other things that we're not yet sure we believe. Rated: 1/4 Apr 13, 2016 Full Review This Is Where I Leave You | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Mark Kermode Observer (UK) There are a few enjoyable moments, with Fey and Fonda making you wish they had a movie of their own, but sadly the narrative is more concerned with the boys, whose relationship crises are altogether more formulaic and less interesting. Rated: 2/5 Oct 26, 2014 Full Review This Is Where I Leave You | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Regardless of how formulaic these sitcom situations prove to be, and how everything conveniently works out for most of the characters, it's a mildly watchable, R-rated, dysfunctional family comedy. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 29, 2022 Full Review This Is Where I Leave You | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Charlotte Harrison Charlotte Sometimes Goes to the Movies [An] immensely underseen indie drama about four children returning home as adults when their father dies. This one is such a gem. Apr 13, 2021 Full Review This Is Where I Leave You | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Richard Crouse Richard Crouse The cast comes together as a unit and even though the movie veers toward easy sentimentality when an edgier approach might have been more realistic, the players are the ties that bind the family and this movie together. julie b Sadly despite Jason Bateman with a beard 🫶🏻 this is less than the sum of its parts. It has a great cast, promising premise, and some entertaining moments, but there’s so little chemistry with the lines and how they’re delivered. Just not super well written :( Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review David H Every character in this movie is an awful human being (maybe the ice skating girl is ok). No one to relate to or root for and no reason to waste your time Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Jim M With this many characters going through so many unimaginably trying situations, it makes it impossible to go in depth on any of them enough for the viewer to care at all. It is difficult for me to NOT like something Bateman and Fey are in, but these screenwriter's were "up" to the task. The ending is worthy of a teenage girl watching her dad try to dance at a wedding eye-roll. Absolutely awful. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/24/24 Full Review Dani G Typical family dramedy with the same situations and same character structure, and kind of the same developments that we've seen in many movies... But nice still, thanks to its charming cast of players Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/25/24 Full Review Nicole C Loved this movie and have watched it several times with different people and everyone loved it. Great cast, funny and bittersweet moments, and I am shocked it didn't have higher ratings. Totally underrated movie. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Alexander H Based on critic reviews, apparently, I'm a know-nothing sucker who is easily entertained and am too stupid to realize this movie is a sanitized retread of other, seemingly more effective movies. But fuck it I loved this movie. It makes me want to have more kids and psychologically manipulate them so that they are guaranteed to turn into charming, yet self-destructive adults like the Altmans. I'll defend this movie to the death (but maybe I should really just read the book). Everyone's allowed to have a guilty pleasure.
